Turku's Most Atmospheric Cafés

Turku's city center is full of cafés, but few of them truly offer something unique. We've gathered our favorites here, places that combine great coffee, a beautiful setting, and genuine local charm.

Let's start on our own corner, of course. Cafe Qwensel sits in the courtyard of the Pharmacy Museum, inside Turku's oldest surviving wooden building, completed in the early 1700s. In summer, coffee is enjoyed in the shade of a cherry tree in our idyllic garden; in winter, in a cozy interior filled with the scent of fresh pastries. This isn't just a café, it's a small trip back in time.

Down on the Aura riverfront, on Läntinen Rantakatu, you'll also find Café Art, one of the city's best-known cafés since 1992. Its warren of small rooms and rotating art exhibitions have made it a classic that locals return to year after year. In summer, the terrace spills out into the shade of linden trees right by the water.

At the start of Eerikinkatu, you can't miss Rebelle, a bright pink brunch café. The menu ranges from avocado toast and club sandwiches to generous pancake stacks, with plenty of gluten-free and vegan options. Yum!

On the corner of Vähätori square sits Café Carré, a lovely, cozy café with both sweet and savory bites and plenty of gluten-free options. It's dog-friendly too, so you can bring your four-legged travel companion along for coffee.

Our sister café, Café Victor, operates at Turku Art Museum, set on the striking Puolalanmäki hill. After a museum visit, it's a natural stop for pastries baked in the same spirit as ours: same company, a touch more polished and modern in feel, the same love of handcraft, and in summer, one of the city's finest café terraces.

Right next to the Cathedral and the university is Fabbe's Café, a family-run business founded in 2012 that has become a particular favorite among students. Everything is baked on-site and the atmosphere is warm and homey. The walls also host a constantly rotating cast of local artists.

Kirjakahvila at Vanha Suurtori is a fully volunteer-run, entirely vegan co-op café. Alongside coffee and lovely pastries, you'll find board games and books, and the café doubles as an events space throughout the year.

Along the Aura River there are plenty more riverside cafés worth exploring too, each with its own particular mood. So if you love coffee and pastries, welcome to Turku's city center, you could easily spend a whole day here on a café crawl.
